The Effect of Imagery Simulation on Empathy

Abstract

|
The purpose of this study was to examine how to increase the level of therapeutic empathy. Therefore imagery simulation which is likely to facilitate conscious emotional sharing was applied in the study to compare empathy with analogy. In the pilot study, two scenarios were developed to investigate the influence of each empathy tool on empathy level. For the verification process, reactions of participants while reading the scenarios were recorded and the recordings were evaluated by trained raters to compare empathy levels of two different empathy tools: imagery simulation and analogy. In Study, participants were assigned to one of two groups which they mainly used empathy tool, imagery simulation or analogy. Each group was asked to apply both imagery simulation and analogy while reading the vignette. The data were collected before and after the treatment. The results indicated that the highest level of empathy was shown in the group of imagery simulation with imagery simulation treatment, while the lowest level was shown in the group of analogy with analogy treatment. The implications and limitations of the study are discussed.
